The legend as follows...

When the "paarkadal" (milky ocean) had been churned up with the help of the mountain "Mantra" as an agitator and the deadly poisonous snake, the serpant king "Vasuki" as the agitation rope, pivoted on the back of a huge tortoise, which could be known as the incarnation of lord Vishnu, 'Kurma Avtar', a lot of celestially worth able things had been obtained. The one among them is the 'Nectar' (food for being immortal),which was supposed to be got back by the lord Vishnu from the demons ,having lured them by taking the 'Mohini' avtar (very beautiful beyond compared-woman).

Later lord Vishnu distributed the 'nectar' equally to all the devas only, left behind the demons. But among the demons, having known about the tricks of lord Vishnu, one came and sat on the deva's row and tasted the nectar from the 'mohini'. This was reported to lord Vishnu, who had been in the 'mohini avatar' by the lord Sun and the lord Moon, who were sitting near that demon.

Then lord vishnu, transformed into His original state and had flown his 'Sudarshna Chakra' onto that demon and the 'chakra' had decapitated the demon and his head fell on the ground. But due to having drung the nectar he didn't die at all. His head had been called as 'Raghu' (with snake body) and the 'Torso',being called 'Kethu' (with sake head). Due to those betrayal, a legend had been there that the 'Raghu' had swallowed and released the Sun and the Moon at regular intervals, hence happened the eclipses of sun and the moon, which are called in Tamil that 'Surya graghanam' and the 'Chandra graghanam'. Due to this, they have been included in the planetary system as shadow planets, that is, they had been spiritually created, not as real.

About

According to Hinduism, every body should have undergone the impacts of the planets when he/she is living in, according to the placement of the planets, when they (the 9 planets) had been at the time of that person's entry (birth) to the earth.

So, when they move in the Galaxy as per the duration allotted to them, so as to move around the Sun, fixing this as their Axis, it's movement can make impacts on all of us, whether it may be good or bad, which may differ person to person, according to the placements when they had been at the time of one's birth.

The name of the 9 planets as per Hinduism are Suryan (Sun), Chandran (Moon), Sevvaai (Mars), Puthan (mercury), Viyalan (Jupiter), Sukran (Venus), Sani (Saturn), Raghu (shadow planet), Kethu (shadow planet), means imaginary planets (Raghu & Kethu).

Here except 'Raghu' and 'Kethu' other planets are rotating in clockwise direction, having the sun as the axis and contrary the 'Raghu' and 'Kethu' do it in anti clockwise. Actually the 'Raghu' and 'Kethu' had it's own legend that how they being included in the 'Navagraghas'.

This is the gate way to the Navagragha temple in the sea at Devipattinam

you have noticed a sign board hanged on the wall of mantapam, that lord Rama had worshiped and consecrated the Navagraghas (also called as Navapasana stones).

The meaning of the sign board seen in tamil

The Navagragha temple which had been consecrated by lord Rama has been at the sea. The devotees who have been suffered from all kind of 'Gragha thosa' such as nagathosam, sarpathosam, mangalyathosam, kalathirathosam, sevvaithosam, thaarathosam, puthirathosam, vaakkuthosam, sanithosam, pithruthosam, thilakhomam, kudumbathosam, would do the release of the said thosams by the well efficient pandits in the 'Sangalpa mantapam'.

The legend that lord Rama... ... as follows !

Once upon, lord Rama, came here in order to search His consort Sita, who had been kidnapped by the demon king Ravana, for that, before left for Srilanka, He had consecrated and worshiped the 'Navagraghas' in the sea. So, now, the idols (stone-like) of 'Navagraghas'what we have seen in the sea, were once upon had consecrated by the lord Rama Himself. So this place is worth noted for it's antique that is it's period of origin and the specialty of being consecrated by a God (incarnation of lord Vishnu).

Heard a lot about this temple otherwise called "Thilakeshwar Temple". As per belief nine planets control the life of human beings and peoples face good or bad things according to the position of these planets. Nice article with beautiful pictures, someday have to visit this religious place.

Hello anup kumar, first thanks for your visit to my hub. It's my pleasure to direct you to that place. The very first thing you should do is, book your train or bus ticket to Madurai. When early morning you reach Madurai, you will have two options, one is, immediate trip to 'Devi pattinam' or otherwise stay at Madurai on that day,and you can worship goddess Sri Meenakshi Amman, Thiruparamkundram of lord Muruga and Alagar kovil of lord Vishnu on that full day. Then the next day morning You can arrange a taxi or otherwise you can prefer bus to Ramanathapuram (Ramnad)which is at two and half hours journey from Madurai. From Ramnad to 'Devipattinam' you can arrange a call taxi(if you come by taxi, you please fix it in Madurai itself, by the taxi operatots who are in the lodges you stayed)or you can go by bus.The timing is, better to reach devipattinam by morning before 9 p.m.

There at the shore you can fix the people for doing the rituals what you want to do.If any doubt, you please inquire the time keepers at the bus stands in Madurai and Ramnad also.Any way my advance wishes to your happy journey to 'Devipattinam'.

Hi raakachi,

Can you elaborate on prayers methods here. Like do we go round the Navagragha and need to dip in sea? Do we need to throw our old cloths into sea? How about changing room for women? Thanks in advance
