THE PERFECT HAIRSTYLE FOR YOUR FACE

There must be a million and one ways to style our hair.

If you like your hair styled short, there are short hair styles for women, short hairstyles for men, short curly hair styles, short black hair styles, celebrity short hair styles, etc.

If you like your hair styled long, there are long frizzy hair styles, long curly hair styles, long layered hair styles, long braided hair styles, etc. However, everyone's face shapes are not created equal. Some faces are round, some are thin, some are soft, and some are angular.

Believe it or not, a hairstyle can help to accentuate or draw away from certain facial characteristics.

The following are tips on styles that can make the most of your particular features:

  • Face Too Round - Putting a side part in the hair will slim and lengthen a face that's too round.
  • Thin Face - Curls or fullness at the sides will widen a long, thin face.
  • Large Nose - A full hairstyle or up swept crown makes the nose less noticeable.
  • Sharp, Angular Features - A wavy or curly hairstyle will soften a chiseled cheekbone, nose or jaw.
  • High forehead - A horizontal line of full bangs can cover the forehead, balancing the face.
  • Strong or Square Chin - A short cut with soft curls or fullness at the crown, takes attention away from the chin.
  • Narrow Chin - Long hair with fullness at the chin will balance a narrow chin.
  • Low Forehead - Vertical lines and soft fullness at the crown can lengthen the face.

HAIR STYLES · WHAT IS MY FACE SHAPE?

It's hard to be objective about your own face shape, but here's a sure fire way to be sure your not biasing your own analysis. Hair designers are the ultimate judges of your face shape, but if you need a little help try this experiment.

There are lots of suggestions on how to figure out your shape, from outlining your face shape on a mirror with lipstick to draping it with a towel and asking others to help you guess the shape. But, there is actually a scientific way to determine your face shape once and for all.

To find out the shape of your face, measure it with a tape measure or ruler. You will take the following measurements.

  1. Measure your face across the top of your cheekbones. Write down the measurement on a piece of paper.
  2. Measure across your jaw line from the widest point to the widest point. Write down the measurement.
  3. Measure across your forehead at the widest point. Generally the widest point will be somewhere about halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline. Write down the measurement.
  4. Measure from the tip of your hairline to the bottom of your chin.

Oval Face : Length equal to one and a half times width.Forehead is wider than the chin.Prominent Cheekbones.Face gracefully tapers to a narrow oval chin.

Round Face : Your face is as wide as it is long. This may vary a little but generally the measurement is close.Face is widest at the cheeks.

Oblong : Longer than it is wide.Forehead, cheekbones and jawline are all about the same width. Can tend to have a prominent chin.Has an elongated appearance.

Heart : Narrow at jaw line, wide at cheekbones/and or forehead.Similar to oval, but the chin tapers to a point.

Square : Your face is about as wide as it is long.Forehead, cheekbones and jawline all about the same width.Squared jawline is the most obvious feature.

Diamond : Widest at cheekbones, narrow forehead and jaw line of approximately equal widths

Triangle : Reverse of the heart-shape.A dominant jaw line with narrowing at the cheek bone, temples and forehead.

WHAT HAIR SUITS MY FACE?

Even though you may love the latest celebrity hair style, it might not be the right hair style for your face. The shape of your face and the proportions of your features will help tell you what hairstyle is best suited to you.

Oval-shaped face

You're lucky - this is the kind of face shape that suits just about any hairstyle. Both long and short hair cuts look great on you, as your face shape is well balanced. The chin and forehead of an oval face shape are in even proportion.

Avoid covering up your perfect face shape with heavy bangs or wearing your hair on your face. You'll lose your face shape and it may add weight to your face.

Round face

Hairstyles with fullness and height at the crown will give the impression of a narrower face. Try a cut with layers while keeping the sides close to your face to make your face appear longer. Round faces suit either short hairstyles swept back from your forehead, or hairstyles that are longer than chin length. Wispy fringes and side parts are also good.

Avoid chin length hair, center parts, fullness at the sides of ears, straight "chopped bangs - these wll all emphasise the shape of your face.

Heart-shaped face

The heart shaped face is widest at the temples and narrowest at the chin, which can appear pointy. Short hair and chin length hair often looks great on this face shape, as the fullness can even out the jaw and chin lines. Chin length bobs, short shags, swept forward layers and wispy bangs all work well.

Avoid full styles that emphasise the upper face without balancing out your narrow chin. Too much height at the crown and tapered necklines will make you look top heavy.

Rectangular, Long face

If your face is long and slender, with your forehead and below cheeks about the same width, hairstyles that balance out the length of your face work best for you. These include short to medium lengths with fullness at the sides and soft wispy bangs. This will shorten the length and add width to your face. Layered styles work well and add softness to the straight lines of your face.

Avoid too much length, it will only make your face look longer. Too much height will also lengthen your face.

Square face

If your face is square, with a strong, square jaw line and often an equally square hairline, the right hairstyles for you are ones that soften the square look of your face. Short to medium length hair cuts, with soft wispy bangs and a wave or curl will compliment and balance out your straight face shape. If you hair is straight, maybe consider a body wave. Side parts and fullness/height at the crown can add length to your square face shape.

Avoid straight styles - long straight hair, blunt bangs, straight bobs and center parts, as they will emphasize your square jawline.

Triangle face

If you face is triangle, with a wider chin that narrows at the forehead, you want to stick to styles that narrow your chin and widen the forehead. This will balance out your features. Shorter hair can often balance our your prominent jaw line, as well as styles that are full at the temples that taper at the jaw. Off center parts, wedges and shags are also good styles for you. Lots of layers will give you the fullness through the upper part of your face.

Avoid Styles that are full at the jawline and center parts.

Easy One-Minute Hairstyles

Here's a small roundup of some styles that pretty much anyone can handle. One must thank Julia Roberts for reminding  about a simple, totally flattering little hair trick : The diagonal mini-part.

Basically, you just part the front couple of inches of your hair at an angle and then brush the back half of your hair straight back, so you get a little lift back there (though a bit of backcombing will help if you need it). And that’s really all there is to it. It’s an old trick, yes, but it’s a little more interesting than the usual side part and it’s just so pretty. So let's all take note for future. reference.

Anyone use this trick already? Want to now? Just want to say that Julia Roberts looks lovely? If so, comment away.

Easy Way to Class Up Your Ponytail

Look out, ladies, here comes another trick for taking your ponytails up a notch. At the Max Azria show this afternoon, Bumble and Bumble stylist Laurent Philippon did the thing where you pull a strand from beneath the pony and wind it around the elastic--only his version was more dramatic, and he had a great secret for getting the hair-wrap to stay put.

So, what you do is: Leave a strand of hair loose near the base of your pony, then wind it around the elastic and wrap it a few more times around the tail itself. (Obviously, you need fairly long hair to get the exact look this model has.) Secure the ends of the strand to the reverse side of the ponytail using one or two discreetly placed hair pins--this kind, not bobby pins, which Philippon says won't work. Who knew?! Then add a couple more strategic pins to keep the wrap from sliding off your elastic. So much prettier than your ordinary gym pony, no?

The Natalie Portman Front Twist

Natalie Portman, you are our hero. See this cute little twisty thing she’s got going on up front here? We believe it’s about to be our new go-to way to spice up a standard ponytail when we are in the mood for something different...

Now, Natalie used it in a fancy updo, but nevertheless, we immediately thought Yeah, we are totally adding that to our next ponytail when we saw it. we just think it’s got a casual coolness that can go either way. Plus, it would only add about 30 seconds onto our styling routine, so even if we don’t get it right the first time, it’s no big deal.
